It represents an innovation in the digital management of chronic respiratory diseases: a mobile app that interfaces with smart inhalers to turn every inhalation into clinically relevant data, optimizing inhalation therapy.
Respiro technology
Automatically measures therapy adherence and inhalation technique, integrating them with real-time environmental data and patient-reported outcomes. A machine learning algorithm analyzes these patterns to generate personalized insights for each patient.
Respiro mobile app
It functions as a diary and digital coach for patients with asthma and COPD: provides smart reminders for medication use, assesses inhalation technique, and generates personalized alerts and advice for the patient. The platform supports remote monitoring by physicians and caregivers.
Context & Challenge
The analysis of the problem in the context of chronic respiratory diseases revealed three critical areas that Respiro needed to address to make a significant impact on patient health. Our focus was on creating a prototype Android application and a cloud platform.
01 Technical Challenge
Multi-sensor and multi-data source ecosystem
The main challenge was to synchronize data from Respiro sensors and external environmental APIs with low latency. The proposed architecture includes intelligent data caching for offline operation and end-to-end encryption. We developed a prototype synchronization protocol with exponential retry to optimize battery and connectivity.
02 Usability Challenge
Designing for users with respiratory limitations
We created a 'progressive disclosure' interface prototype that displays information step by step to avoid overwhelming the user. We studied app interactions to minimize them to the essential and optimize them based on the patient’s patterns.
03 Clinical Challenge
Turning data into clinically relevant actions
We collaborated with general practitioners and pulmonologists to study the interfaces for professionals, optimizing the management aspects and flagging recurrent patterns among the patient population to the professional.

Following several clinical studies, Amiko achieved important clinical validations for its Respiro sensor platform and Respiro app, including increased therapy adherence, more mindful medication use, and improved awareness by the primary physician and/or reference pharmacist of individual patients’ therapy progress.
